Basketball fiction is a genre that is brimming with demand from an audience that has intense passion for the sport. Craig Leener has done it right.
This Was Never About Basketball, is the first book of a 3-part series following the journey of Zeke Archer, a teenage basketball prospect, who finds himself on a mission to not only save his own basketball career, but also the game itself.
Zeke’s dreams of playing basketball beyond his high school years get averted by some troublesome teenage strife. His only hope for redemption is an opportunity to play in a 3 on 3 tournament with his two best friends at the University of Kansas. A strange series of events begins to take on a noticeable intergalactic twist.
Zeke takes on an eccentric, gifted sidekick, Lawrence, who serves as his guiding sage. Lawrence goes about things his own way, and his cryptic communication keeps Zeke on edge.
This Was Never About Basketball will keep you turning one page after another. You’ll be questioning what is real and what isn’t. You’ll be rooting for Zeke and Lawrence. And you will be left with an inspired culmination that will leave you looking forward to books 2 and 3.
No need to be an expert in X’s and O’s. There is just enough basketball action to satisfy the hoopers out there, but this coming of age, is-it-science-fiction-or not?- story will suit any reader looking for a good time.
